The NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in Eastern New Orleans is where Lockheed Martin makes External Tanks (ET) for the Space Shuttle. The main assembly building is 43 acres big. The Vertical Assembly Building toward the right, sporting the blue NASA "meatball" logo, is over 200 feet high, accomodating the 157-foot ET in the vertical position. The main assembly building is in the midst of getting a new roof. In the 60's, Boeing built the Saturn S-1C moon rockets for the Apollo program here. |
